Unganisha is a musical meeting between a traditional musician from Kenya - Labdi Ommes (Orutu and vocals) - and an experimental electronic artist from Norway - Bernt Isak Wærstad (electronics). They are always looking for new fusions of East African Music, Western art music and electronic club music. Parts from the two cultures are used as building blocks to create a new and personal form of music!
Unganisha had its first spark in Nairobi in 2016 when the two musicians met for the first time on the cultural hotspot The Alchemist. It was maybe not the most natural cooperation thinkable but they are both used to being outsiders seeking new connections and investigating new ideas. Labdi Ommes are currently the only female Orutu player in East Africa. Orutu is an instrument that it has been tabu for women to play. Ommes is part of the increasing amount of youn African musicians picking up traditional and indigenous instruments and reintroducing to the music environments and stages. Wærstad is a multifaceted artist working with many musical styles from electroacustic free improvisation to electronic pop, programming and sound art.
